It has come to the attention of the EPPD that elderly residents have been the target of "ruse" burglaries; burglaries in which the offender uses a form of deception to commit a burglary.
In many cases, these offenders will knock on a resident’s door and will portray themselves as working for the town’s Village and/or working with the Public Works Department, or other forms of manual service (roof repair, driveway repairman, etc.) These offenders will ask to enter your house to check your water or to complete other services. While the offender distracts their victim, their partners in crime will enter through a rear door and will rummage through the victim’s house looking to steal any valuables.
Many of these offenders are men in their 30s-50s who wear yellow construction-type vests or uniforms.
Please note. . .The Evergreen Park Public Works employees will ALWAYS schedule an appointment via telephone PRIOR to their arrival to the residents’ home, and will always arrive in a Village vehicle such as the one depicted below. Village employees will always have an identification card on their person and can be seen wearing shirts/vests similar to the photo below.
